Mercedes-Benz Stadium features a robust signage and wayfinding package that includes a variety of overhead, free-standing and wall-mounted directionals, along with concessions signage and decorative wall applications. Front-of-house signage is predominantly red, and the color has been applied to the underside of stairwells to highlight vertical circulation points. Most elements include a subtle, angular motif that mimics the stadium’s geometry. Complimentary linear patterns (shown at right) have been carried onto soffits and other architectural elements.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s modern lines and clean aesthetic are clearly evident throughout the main concourses. Natural light fills the large, open expanses during the day, and at night, the glass façade offers beautiful views of Atlanta. The neutral palette is punctuated by red and white accents, and custom artwork offers fans a connection to the local community.

An unobstructed, horizontal datum line runs continuously throughout the concourses. Mercedes-Benz Stadium would like to preserve this architectural anchor by keeping it free of visual clutter. All active branding must be contained BELOW the horizontal datum line, which starts at the food service soffit height and varies from concourse to concourse. For activation zones containing mega-columns, branding may carry upward, beyond the horizontal datum, along the column faces. It is preferred that this branding, and all elements adjoining premium spaces, be passive in nature and reflect the sophistication of the surrounding interior finishes.

While each club space is different and offers guests a unique experience, there are several common design elements featured throughout Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s premium environments. In contrast to the cool, relatively neutral palette found within the concourses, the premium spaces reflect a warmer palette, comprised of rich materials and textures. Gold metallic tones are paired with nest-like textile motifs to create opulent, yet comfortable, stadium environments. Subtle red accents can be found on furniture, as well as within cabinetry and artwork. Plenty of digital displays and choice bowl views allow guests to remain fully engaged in the stadium event.

The suites on the upper and NCR levels reflect the same rich materiality found within Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s premium club spaces. Natural tones and textures help to bring the outdoors in, and sculptural fixtures, like the one included in this Executive Suite, speak to the linear, nest-like motifs seen throughout the building. Layered, architectural panels offer homes for decorative cove lighting and reinforce the feather-inspired visual language expressed in other areas of the stadium.

A paneled curtain system can be used to provide guests with a quieter, more intimate event experience. Several monitors throughout each suite ensure that guests never miss a moment of
bowl activity.

Lighting quality directly effects mood and can greatly influence how a brand is perceived. The lighting schemes within Mercedes-Benz Stadium have been carefully directed and sensitively designed to enhance its interior spaces. Thusly, Mercedes-Benz Stadium requires that all lit activation elements compliment the base building, with regard to both temperature (K) and quantity (lm) of light emitted. Colored and/or kinetic lighting effects are discouraged.

In addition, Mercedes-Benz Stadium wishes to promote a sustainable use of resources, and requires the use of energy-efficient LEDs for all lit activation elements. In keeping with Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s energy performance strategy, deliberate efforts should also be made to limit excessive, misdirected
or wasted light.

The general lighting approach for Mercedes-Benz Stadium uses suspended cylinder downlights within the concourses to minimize the brightness on vertical surfaces, which would compete with the façade skin lighting. Linear lighting has been used to reinforce wayfinding at vomitories, stairs, and ramps. A second layer of accent lighting is woven throughout the concourses to highlight art and supergraphic walls, as well as introduce decorative hospitality elements at bars and concessions.

The entire building is controlled on a networked lighting control system, which can be programmed to create custom scenes for special events. Lighting the the clubs and suites is able to be dimmed, however the remainder of the facility is on/off only. The concourse lighting system uses photosensors to automatically shut off electric lighting when sufficient natural light is available through the façade skin.

All public spaces utilize LED light sources with an 80+ color rendering index. A 4000K ‘cool white’ color temperature is used throughout public areas including concourses, ramps, toilets, and concessions. A 3000K ‘warm white’ light contributes to the VIP areas’ rich atmosphere.

The façade lighting system is color-changing and can create motion-based effects, which sweep around the stadium skin.

Sports field lighting is LED and includes individually-addressable fixtures for theatrical ‘shows’ during events. Sports lighting is also color-changing.

To preserve an unobstructed viewing environment, the NFL and Mercedes-Benz Stadium have rigidly defined the appearance of those spaces visible from within the bowl. Thus, lighting within and surrounding alcove bar areas must be limited to that which is part of the base building only. Colored and/or kinetic lighting effects are restricted.

Each alcove bar features several decorative pendant lighting fixtures that are in keeping with the stadium’s overall design intent. The fixtures not only express the nest-like motifs and red accents found throughout the building, they also help to immediately identify where bars are located from within the bowl. Mercedes-Benz Stadium requires that these fixtures remain an integral part of all partnership design solutions.
